AMD Ryzen 5 9600 Nearly Matches 9600X in Early Benchmarks

The AMD Ryzen 5 9600 launched recently as a slightly more affordable variant of the popular Ryzen 5 9600X. Despite launching over a month ago, the 9600 still appears rather difficult to track down in retail stores. However, a recent PassMark benchmark has provided some insights as to the performance of the non-X variant of AMD’s six-core Zen 5 budget CPU. Unsurprisingly, the Ryzen 5 9600X and the Ryzen 5 9600 are neck-and-neck, with the 9600X scraping past its non-X counterpart by a mere 2.2% in the CPU benchmark.

According to the PassMark result, the Ryzen 5 9600 scored 29,369, compared to the Ryzen 5 9600X’s 30,016, while single-core scores were 4581 for the 9600X and 4433 points for the 9600, representing a 3.2% disparity between the two CPUs. The result is not surprising, since the only real difference between the 9600 and the 9600X is 200 MHz boost clock. All other specifications, including TDP, core count, cache amount and base clock speed, are identical. Both CPUs are also unlocked for overclocking, and both feature AMD Precision Boost 2. While the Ryzen 5 9600 isn’t available just yet, it will seemingly be a good option for those who want to stretch their budget to the absolute maximum, since recent reports indicate that it will be around $20 cheaper than the Ryzen 5 9600X, coming in at around the $250-260 mark.

It looks as though GeoGuessr, that browser-based geography puzzle game filling your YouTube Shorts and Instagram Reels, will finally get a Steam version, after 12 years as a browser game. According to a freshly launched Steam Store page and an announcement on said Steam Store page, GeoGuessr will launch on Steam in April, 2025. Until now, GoeGuessr has been a browser-based game with a monthly subscription, but it’s not entirely clear what the monetization strategy will be when it launches to Steam next month. At launch, the Steam version of the game will feature two online gameplay modes: Ranked Solo Duels and unranked Team Duels.

GeoGuessr is a puzzle game that drops you in a random unknown location on a street view map, and you have to use visual clues to determine where you’ve been dropped. The more accurate you are and the quicker you guess, the higher your score. The GeoGuessr Steam Store page makes mention of a “Steam Pass” that will be needed to play in the ranked Solo Duels mode, but there is also mention of a free version that includes unlimited access to the Amateur Division for Solo gameplay and unranked Team Duels mode. While the subscriptions for the browser-based and Steam Edition versions of GeoGuessr will remain separate—buying one does not grant access to the other—there will be cross-play between browser and Steam gamers. Pricing for the Steam Edition is so far unclear, but the browser-based GeoGuessr costs between $3.99 and $9.99 per month, depending on which plan you opt for.

Ayaneo’s AM01S is a mini PC with a built-in articulating touch-screen and a design inspired by ’80s and ’90s retro computing. For 2025, the AM01S has received a number of choice upgrades that make it both more powerful and more compatible. The headline feature updates for the AM01S are the new AMD Strix Point Ryzen AI 9 HX 370 and the new display, which features a number of improvements over the Ayaneo AM02. The basic specifications also include DDR5-5600 RAM and an M.2 2280 PCIe 4.0 SSD for storage, with an SDXC card slot on the side for migrating files and expanding storage. Ayaneo has yet to announce pricing or expected availability for the AM01S, but the mini PC looks to be officially launching soon.

The 4-inch touchscreen in the Ayaneo AM01S is a native horizontal display, as opposed to the rotated vertical display from the AM02, which means it should present no compatibility issues similar to those that plagued some Lenovo Legion Go and Valve Steam users when those devices first launched. The tiny display also supports Windows extended mode, meaning you can operate the AM01S using only the small touchscreen—another improvement over the AM02, which could not use the built-in display as the primary screen. The display is attached to the retro-inspired case with a hinge that allows for 90° of articulation, so the mini PC can be used flat on its side or vertically, in which case it looks something like a CRT-equipped Macintosh computer. Ayaneo even cheekily uses a colored version of the cursive “hello” text often featured on the original Macintosh advertising materials. The idea seems to be that users will use the secondary touchscreen to display system information, run diagnostic apps or widgets, or simply as an aesthetic add-on. Ayaneo also pre-installs its AYASpace v2.5, which contains a custom control center for things like TDP control and performance monitoring.

(PR) Remedy Entertainment Showcases FBC: Firebreak’s Altered Augments System

Hi everyone, I’m Julius Fondem, Community Manager here at Remedy Entertainment. Today I’m very excited, jazzed even, to talk to you about a brand-new feature in our upcoming game FBC: Firebreak—Altered Augments. If you’re not familiar with FBC: Firebreak, it’s a cooperative first-person shooter for three players set within a mysterious federal agency under assault by extradimensional forces, in the iconic Control universe. Battle through hordes of otherworldly monsters with up to two friends, customize your gear and level up as you fight back against this ever-growing threat.

This being our first multiplayer, we’re very excited to bring it to you, the community, and to that end, we’ve designed FBC: Firebreak to be as easy as possible to get into. This is a game best played together with your friends, having a great time laughing while chaotic and wacky things happen! This isn’t a new hobby that you need to log onto every day for rewards. None of that FOMO stuff here. Just get together with your friends over the weekend for a good time.

As a Firebreaker, you are a badass combat engineer who descends deep into The Oldest House to solve paranatural crises, and to achieve this, you are given an assortment of normal and, well, not so normal tools by The Federal Bureau of Control. These come in the form of three bespoke Crisis Kits, each containing a unique Tool like the Crank-Operated Fluidic Ejector, an improvised device like the BOOMbox, and an Altered Augment.
Altered Augments are Altered Items that the Federal Bureau of Control has contained and harnessed for approved use by the Firebreak Initiative. So basically, the Federal Bureau of Control is in deep trouble and decided to make weapons out of paranatural objects they barely understand and gave them to their brave first responders. Surely, nothing can go wrong. Each Altered Augment possesses unique abilities and is the pinnacle of each Crisis Kit’s repertoire. Let me introduce you to our Altered Augments!

The Garden Gnome (AI9) is a regular looking garden gnome that is all but normal. You can attach the Garden Gnome to the Electro-Kinetic Charge Impactor which allows you to fire it towards your enemies. Once it lands, it will summon a lightning storm around it, damaging and stunning all creatures in its area and draining all energy from surrounding batteries. However, be careful! The Garden Gnome walks around and doesn’t discern friend from foe. Unless you want to play a teeny tiny prank on your crewmates. In that case, no need to be careful.

The Piggy Bank (AI16) attaches to the end of the Wrench, and when you swing your Wrench around, it deals massive damage in a large arc in front of you and shatters, releasing a paranatural coin tornado that damages all creatures in it, but don’t worry, the Piggy Bank reassembles itself back together after the tornado makes its way back to you! Just be sure to not hit your friends with the tornado as getting hit by a multitude of coins in the face is considered rude in some cultures.

The Teapot (AI44) attaches to the top of the Crank-Operated Fluidic Ejector (COFE) giving it the ability to shoot boiling water at enemies. When the Teapot is attached to the COFE, the tool deals the burning condition and cannot overheat. Do note that this also means that the COFE now damages teammates and cannot clear any other conditions from them except the cold condition. Lastly, the Teapot does not actually come with any real tea. Sorry, tea lovers.

We’ve been hard at work on FBC: Firebreak with our 50-person strong development team and can’t wait to show you more of the game and get it in your hands! FBC: Firebreak is slated for release this summer, and we’ve got plenty more to share with you before then.

FBC: Firebreak is scheduled to release in Summer 2025 for PC via Steam and Epic Games Store, Xbox Series X|S and PlayStation 5. Wishlist now!

The ominously named PowerColor Red Devil AMD Radeon RX 9070 XT looks to be getting the same treatment as the Hellhound Spectral White edition with an all-white Spectral Edition refresh. While the design has yet to be confirmed by PowerColor, it has seemingly leaked on Amazon ahead of the official announcement. While the page seems to have been taken down by the retail giant, VideoCardz managed to grab some images of the new white AMD RX 9070 XT GPU before it was removed.

Much like the Hellhound Spectral Edition, the Red Devil Spectral Edition has been completely drained of color. Even the hallmark Red Devil logo on the cooling fins in the backplate cutout and the illuminated Hellstone at the end of the RX 9070’s shroud seems to have a clearer acrylic cover, as opposed to the smoky acrylic cover on the standard issue Red Devil card. Everything else on the Red Devil Spectral White edition seems to be identical to the regular Red Devil RX 9070 XT. Pricing also seems to be identical to the original, at $899 or €929. A launch date for the Spectral White RX 9070 XT Red Devil is unclear at the time of writing, but it will likely be soon, given its appearance on Amazon.

AMD’s Radeon RX 9000 series of GPUs spent just a few days on the retail market, and they are already sold out. If you are wondering just how many have been sold, AMD has a number for you. According to the information shared at the AI PC Innovation Summit in Beijing, AMD claims that it has sold as many as 200,000 Radeon RX 9070 and RX 9070 XT graphics cards in the first wave. Current retail channels show severely constrained inventory for AMD’s latest GPUs, though supply chain forecasts indicate normalization expected by early Q2. Board partners have implemented significant price premiums across their custom-designed variants, with RX 9070 XT models commanding up to $200 above AMD’s reference pricing structure. While AMD has issued statements advocating for adherence to suggested retail figures, the company maintains a hands-off approach to partner pricing strategies, acknowledging the market dynamics of premium component allocation.

The initial allocation bottleneck should resolve as manufacturing capacity scales to meet demand, potentially stabilizing both availability and price points by mid-April. Yeston, one of AMD’s longest-standing AIBs, has suggested that “now the supply is unstable, but we will restock every week. Please don’t be frustrated if you didn’t get it. The supply will become stable and continue to be available after April.” However, we still don’t understand how AMD is counting these sales. The company noted that the first wave has been sold, and that is likely their first shipment of Navi 48 SKU from TSMC. When TSMC ships more chips, AMD distributes them to its AIB partners for assembly. That could be the second wave. As these GPUs are ordered months in advance, AMD’s AIBs are likely already shipping the next wave of GPUs to retail stores.

Update 21:00 UTC: AMD clarified for Tom’s Hardware that the initial sales claim seems to be a mistake made by the original source, BenchLife. Reportedly no sales numbers were given out the event. The report page has seen seemingly deleted by BenchLife.
